Achieving goals the SMART way

We have been doing a lot of goal setting recently and the SMART format is still the way to do it! So, here is quick example of setting SMART goals.

Here’s an example:

Goal: Grow my business

S – Specific. Make sure your goal is clearly defined. For example, grow my customer base by 25%.

M – Measurable. Make sure you can measure your goal and therefore know when you have achieved it. For example, I currently have 40 customers. An increase of 25% would bring my customer total to 50. Therefore, each quarter I need to add 2-3 customers to stay on track.

A – Attainable. What do you need to attain this goal? More time? Resources? Relationships? Make sure your goals are attainable and you identify any roadblocks to achieving them up front. For example, this goal will be attainable if I make sure to hire an assistant to help with other obligations.

R – Realistic. Can you realistically accomplish this goal? Only you will know the answer to this question – do you have other commitments that may stop you from allotting the time needed to work on your goals? For example, it will take 10 extra hours per week on average to acquire and service these additional clients. With my re-organized team I do have this additional time to allot to acquiring these clients.

T – Time-based. Link your goals to a certain amount of time. For example, I will grow my customer base by 25% in the next 12 months.

Happy goal setting!
